The short answer
An eSIM is a SIM card built into your phone. Instead of putting in a plastic card, you download a plan to it, usually by scanning a QR code. For travel it means you can buy data before you leave, keep your normal number for calls and texts, and be online the moment you land.
Everything you need to know about digital SIMs, how they work, and why they're the easiest way to get data abroad.
An eSIM is a SIM card that's built into your phone. Instead of inserting a small plastic card, you download a mobile plan to it, usually by scanning a QR code.
Most phones released in the last few years support eSIM, and many can hold several eSIM profiles at once alongside a regular SIM card.
Why eSIMs are great for travel
You can buy and install a travel plan before you leave home, so you're online the moment you land. There's no need to find a SIM shop at the airport, show your passport or fiddle with a SIM tray tool.
Because your regular SIM stays in place, you still receive calls and texts on your usual number, while the travel eSIM handles mobile data at local prices.
What you need
A phone that supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked, a Wi-Fi connection to install the plan, and a couple of minutes. That's it.
Common questions
Does an eSIM replace my normal SIM?
No. Your usual SIM stays in the phone and keeps your number working for calls and texts. The travel eSIM sits alongside it and handles mobile data.
Can I install an eSIM before I travel?
Yes, on the day you travel: install it on Wi-Fi before you leave, then leave it switched off until you land. Some plans start counting when they first connect abroad and others when they are installed, so installing on the day keeps all your days.
Can I move an eSIM to a new phone?
Not by yourself. An eSIM can only be installed on one phone, and a second phone will refuse it as already in use. If you change phones, contact support with your order number and we'll check what's possible for your plan. This is the one real disadvantage against a plastic SIM.
