Staying connected in Morocco

September 19, 2026 · 5 min read

The short answer

Cities and the main tourist routes have solid 4G. The High Atlas and the desert south of Merzouga do not, and no plan changes that. A travel eSIM works on landing; a local SIM is cheap but needs your passport and a shop visit.

Medinas, mountains and desert: where the signal holds, where it does not, and what to buy.

Where it works and where it stops

Marrakesh, Casablanca, Fes, Rabat and Tangier are well served, and so are the roads between them. Signal reaches most of the medinas, though thick walls and narrow lanes will drop it.

In the High Atlas, on trekking routes and in the deep desert, expect nothing for long stretches. This is geography, not a plan problem.

What to buy

Local SIMs are inexpensive and need passport registration in person. Airport kiosks charge a premium over the same SIM in town.

A travel eSIM is installed before you fly, which matters most on the evening you arrive, when you are tired and looking for a taxi rather than a phone shop.

How much data

A week of maps, messaging and photographs sits around 3 GB. Two weeks with daily uploads is nearer 8 GB.

Common questions

Can I use WhatsApp calling in Morocco?

Calling over WhatsApp and similar apps has been restricted by Moroccan networks at various times. Messages and data work normally; treat app-based voice calls as something to test rather than depend on.

Is there public Wi-Fi?

Cafes, riads and hotels generally have it. Quality varies, and in the medinas it is often shared across a building, so speeds drop in the evening.
