A simple way to estimate your mobile data use abroad, with real-world examples for different kinds of travellers.
Buying too little data means hunting for Wi-Fi halfway through your trip. Buying too much means paying for gigabytes you never use. A few minutes of planning gets it right.
Typical usage per hour
Maps and browsing use roughly 50–100 MB an hour. Social media apps use around 100–200 MB. Video calls use 300–500 MB, and streaming video can use 700 MB or more at standard quality.
Examples for 14 days
Light user (maps, messaging, a little browsing): 3–5 GB. Average user (plus daily social media and a few video calls): 7–10 GB. Heavy user (streaming, hotspot for a laptop): 15–20 GB or more.
Make your data go further
Download offline maps and playlists before you leave, restrict photo backups to Wi-Fi, and lower video quality in streaming apps. Our data calculator can help you pick a size.
