The short answer
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM before you land, and use a travel eSIM for data instead. Those two steps remove almost every surprise bill. Everything else below saves you data once you are already connected.
Roaming bills can ruin a great holiday. Here's how to stay connected abroad without the surprise at the end.
Home carriers often charge a daily fee or high per-megabyte rates for using your phone abroad. A few simple habits keep that bill at zero.
1. Turn off data roaming on your home SIM
Do this before you board. It's the single most effective way to avoid unexpected charges.
2. Use a travel eSIM for data
A prepaid plan gives you a fixed amount of data for a fixed price. When it runs out, it simply stops, with no extra charges.
3. Download offline maps
Google Maps and many other apps let you save maps for offline use. Download your destination on Wi-Fi.
4. Disable automatic updates and backups
Photo backups and app updates can use gigabytes. Restrict them to Wi-Fi in your settings.
5–7. Call over the internet, lower video quality, use Wi-Fi for big downloads
Messaging apps, reduced streaming quality and trusted Wi-Fi for large files make any data plan last much longer.
